As an Indian student, life in the United States of America can be both – exciting and challenging! There are myriads of things and places to experience once in the USA, but it can also be overwhelming trying to adjust to a new culture and way of life. Indians value family and community, while in the United States, individualism and independence are prioritized. In a country as vibrant and diverse as the USA, it is easy to find friends and community, and there are lots of resources and support available, academically and otherwise. The 4.5 million+ strong ‘Indo-American’ community in the USA also ensures that the students have lots of opportunities to get involved in Indian cultural activities, whether it’s joining a dance club or taking part in socio-cultural fests.

Scholarship options in the USA

Studying in the USA becomes affordable with a wide range of scholarships offered to international students.

Academic Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence after careful examination of a student’s academic performance. Student’s profile evaluation is done on the basis of factors such as previous academic performance indicated by GPA and scores in standardized tests like SAT/GRE or GMAT.

Merit-based Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to students based on exemplary performance in academics, co-curricular or extracurricular activity. While most USA Universities link this scholarship with academic excellence, it could also be awarded to students who have performance in artistic or athletic fields. A student’s financial background is not given any consideration while evaluating the amount of reward under this scholarship.

Need-based Scholarships

Commonly known as financial aid or grant, these scholarships are awarded to students belonging to the financially weaker section. To be eligible for need-based scholarship, a student must have a strong overall profile as per the university’s admission eligibility criteria and should be eligible to show proof of the weak financial condition of sponsors. While international students are also eligible for this scholarship, the majority of the USA Universities restrict this benefit to only domestic students.

Athletic Scholarships

USA Universities offer athletic scholarships to the students who have showed exemplary performance in sports. These scholarships are for the students representing the University in some sports or athletic event individually or playing in the University team. Students aiming to get athletic scholarships have to meticulously search for the right match, as all the Universities have teams playing for some specific sport and are interested in awarding scholarships to athletes having track record of playing that sport only.

Individual Scholarships

These scholarships are University specific, awarded by individuals like alumni or by some trust in the memory of some individuals or by corporates. The criteria for these scholarships varies depending on the cause for which these individuals are working. Some of the examples of such scholarships are TATA Scholarship at Cornell University, The Gates Scholarship, Hope Scholarship in the memory of Valerie Grace Wheeler etc.

Fellowships

These awards are designated for outstanding Indians pursuing research-based Master’s or Doctoral Programs in the USA. The fellowships are University as well as research area specific; for example, President APJ Abdul Kalam postgraduate fellowship is awarded to students accepted into PhD programs related to Physics and Biology at University of South Florida. Fulbright Nehru Fellowships are for students pursuing Masters in select Universities in the USA in the field of art and culture, public administration and journalism, etc.
